SHOCKING images and videos released by Network Rail showing the casual misuse of a footpath level crossing in Droitwich has prompted the rail operator to issue a safety warning.
The footage and pictures show some members of the public with an apparent disregard for their own, their children’s or their pet’s safety around the railway tracks, which are accessible on foot.
The rail operator is aware of nearly 50 cases of misuse which have been reported by train drivers or caught on hidden cameras in Worcestershire and the West Midlands so far this year.

Some of the more distressing images show dog walkers sitting their pets down on the tracks for photos, a young boy doing one-armed push ups and parents letting toddlers play on the live railway lines.
Network Rail has branded the behaviour as ‘incredibly dangerous’ and will now be stationing level crossing safety teams at problem crossings to warn people of dangers and hand out leaflets explaining how to cross safely.

Alexandra France, Network Rail Level crossing safety manager, said: “In so many of the incidents filmed, the difference of just a few seconds could have led to tragedy for those involved.
“I can’t downplay the danger they were in – with serious injury or worse a huge possibility.
“No matter how well you think you know a crossing, all users must obey the rules around using level crossings every time they use it. It just really isn’t worth the risk.”
Advice from Network Rail says pedestrians should always follow signs and instructions, concentrate when around level crossings by avoiding distractions such as mobile phones.
Pedestrians should also stop, listen and look in both directions and cross quickly with children close and dogs on leads.
