SANITARY bins have been installed in Wychavon’s men’s public toilets in support of a national campaign.
The Boys Needs Bins campaign, led by Prostate Cancer UK, aims to raise awareness of the issue of male incontinence. It calls for sanitary bins in all male loos and a change in the law to make this a legal requirement.
Wychavon has recently installed sanitary bins in all 11 of its male public toilets and is urging other toilet providers to do the same.
About 1 in 3 men in the UK over 65 will experience urinary incontinence issues and 1 in 20 men aged over 60 will experience bowel incontinence.
Currently the only option they have is to use a disabled toilet. But many men feel embarrassed to do so because they don’t consider themselves to be disabled.
Councillor Beverley Hardman, executive board member for boosting natural capital on Wychavon District Council, said: “Incontinence is seen as a women’s issue, but the reality is it affects everyone and that’s why we’re delighted to be backing this campaign.
“It would be fantastic if we could have male sanitary bins installed in every toilet with public access across the district.
“So, I urge any business or other public toilet provider to join the campaign.
“It’s a simple and relatively inexpensive step but will be transformational for those men who need it by ensuring they can dispose of their sanitary waste easily, safely and with dignity.”
