DROITWICH man Patrick Healy is celebrating after winning the British Melodeon title for the eight time in a row.

Irish-born Patrick held onto the 13D Melodeon (018) title and the Michael O’Leary Memorial Trophy at the British Championships, which were in St Helens on June 29.

Patrick won the Midland regional championship on April 24 to secure his place at the British Championships.

Patrick told the Standard: “I am delighted to hold on to my title and retain my trophy.

“It’s great to compete. We are all like one big family dedicated to playing Irish music.

“It’s part of my identity as I’m Irish born and I’m proud of our music. It’s something we all love and respect.”

The results in the British Championships mean Patrick has qualified for the All-Ireland Championships on August 10 in County Wexford in Ireland.

There he will compete against the rest of the World in the final.

It is hosted by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, the largest worldwide organisation devoted to the promotion and preservation of Irish traditional music, song, dance and language.

Patrick has won more than 20 medals and trophies over the years, including 18 gold, two sliver and two bronze.
