A TEAM of runners have taken on a charity run in Worcester and raised over £10,000 for county hospitals in the process.

A total of 50 runners embarked on the 10th annual Worcester City Run with all funds raised going to the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity.

The charity supports Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust which operates the Alex in Redditch, the Kidderminster Hospital, the Worcestershire Royal and an endoscopy unit at Evesham Community Hospital.

Participants, chose hospital services close to their hearts, before competing in the run’s 10th anniversary event covering either 10km or a half marathon.

Charlotte, who ran to say thank you for her treatment received on the vascular ward at the Worcestershire Royal, said: ” I’m very grateful to all the staff involved in my care and was thinking of ways to give back in thanks and thought this would be perfect.”

A couple, Adam and Becky, whose daughter had treatment in the children’s oncology service at the Worcestershire Royal took on the challenge in support of the charity’s specialist fund – the Children of Worcestershire Cancer Fund.

Becky said: “Adam and I are extremely motivated to support this charity as our daughter had a wilms tumour at the age of three and a half years old.

“She had joint care with Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Worcestershire Royal Hospital and the team were unbelievable.

“They were so supportive and continue to support us. We are both very motivated to help the charities which have supported us and families in our situation.”

Neata and Rob, took on the challenge with a group of 22 friends and family in memory of their daughter Neath. Neath was diagnosed with lymphoma at the Royal in June 2022 and passed away in May 2023.

Neata praised members of the oncology team including paediatric oncology consultant, Baylon who diagnosed Neath and their colleagues Dawn, Tracey and Charlotte.

Neata added: “Her friends and family wanted to take this opportunity to raise money for this charity in her name so the oncology team can continue to support other children going through cancer treatment.”

The head of fundraising and community development at the charity, Sophie Burt, said the support received has been ‘wonderful to see’.

Adding: “The runners forming this year’s team have really gone the extra mile with their fundraising and are set to make a real difference for patients, staff and services across our hospitals.

“The team total sits at over £10,000 raised, a wonderful sum to have raised, thank you to our runners.”
