A PETITION containing 570 signatures has been submitted to Wychavon District Council calling for a youth club in Droitwich town centre.
The list, which garnered 570 names online and 63 letters, was presented by the Droitwich Spa Youth Council to the authority’s chairman, Coun George Duffy.
There has been plenty of previous criticism that Droitwich is a town where there is not a lot for young people to do.
‘New centre will benefit all young people’
Coun Richard Morris, the chair of the Droitwich Area Young People’s Action Group, has been backing the campaign.
“I along with colleagues have been striving to create a central youth centre for our community.
“This is not just a personal goal. it’s an initiative that will benefit all young people in our town.
“The youth club will benefit all young people in our town.
“It would be a safe space where they can meet, share experiences with friends and shape their environment according to their needs is essential.
“We believe that providing a constructive outlet like a youth club can help the wellbeing of younger people
“Droitwich deserves better for its younger generation.
“The establishment of this centre will not only provide them with recreational opportunities but also foster community spirit.”
‘Petition will be considered’
Jennifer Taylor, Wychavon’s director of communities and housing, said: “We will consider the petition and the views of our young people and continue to explore potential opportunities.
“However, we already invest £128,000-a-year from Worcestershire Public Health and our own money into youth provision, fixed and mobile, across our three towns and in rural areas.
“If we make any changes to this provision, we will need to decide what current youth provision we stop funding.
“That’s the harsh reality.
“That means any new provision will need to be properly evidence based so we can be sure there is an actual need for a youth club in Droitwich town centre.”
