RESIDENTS of Droitwich are being asked to contribute to a new short film celebrating the life of local legend Rik Mayall ahead of the town’s inaugural comedy festival in his honour.

To help promote the Rik Mayall Comedy Festival – May 31 to June 7 – Droitwich Arts Network (DAN) has secured funding to make a film exploring the late comedians ongoing influence and inspiration on the town where he grew up and its residents.

Volunteers from DAN are working with members of the award-winning storytelling collective Harp and a Monkey and regional arts provider Live & Local on the project.

Martin Purdy, from Harp and a Monkey, said: “The plan is to create an uplifting and short art film that will feature a collage of words and images all provided by local people in celebration of Rik.

“The important thing to stress is we are not looking for earth-shattering anecdotes, just everyday recollections and thoughts.

“It doesn’t matter if you never met Rik, it’s about how it made you feel as a local seeing him doing well and how it may have inspired you or someone you know.”

To take part, residents can share a written sentence or two, or short voice recording on any theme relating to the popular comic that roots him in the local community – from bumping into him at school or in the corner shop to seeing him at the local theatre or just sat watching him on TV in your living room.

All contributions will appear anonymously, while every contributor will be credited at the end of the film. The film is expected to be finished in early May.

All contributions should be emailed to Martin Purdy at [email protected] before Friday, April 4.
