THE MP for Droitwich and Evesham has branded April 1 as ‘Rachel’s cruel day’ referring to the increased costs facing households as the chancellor’s Spring Statement announcements come into effect.
Nigel Huddleston MP has raised serious concerns over rising costs set to hit families in Worcestershire and across the nation, warning households face an extra £1,191 in annual expenses as of April 1.
A series of bill increases have come into force under Labour chancellor Rachel Reeves. With the start of the new tax year on April 6, households will be grappling with rising expenses across a broad range of essential services and utilities.
The increases include an average rise of £111 in energy bills, as the Energy Price Cap goes up to £1,849 – despite Labour’s earlier promise to cut bills by £300. Council Tax is also set to rise by £109, contradicting Labour’s pledge to freeze it. Families will face further financial pressure with water bills increasing by £123, car tax by £5, and the TV licence by another £5.
Phone and broadband bills will rise too, with typical increases of £46 and £36 respectively. Nursery fees, a major cost for many working parents, are expected to go up by £756.
Nigel Huddleston criticised these increases as a direct result of Labour’s ‘economic mismanagement’, stating ‘families are being forced to pay more due to broken promises and a failure to get a grip on the cost of living crisis.’
He said: “Families in my constituency are forced to pay the price for Labour’s economic chaos. From council tax to water bill rises, families simply cannot afford this Labour Government.
“People should not be forced to pay more for Labour’s choices. Only the Conservatives will remain on the side of hardworking families in Droitwich, Evesham and the villages.”
