DROITWICH Spa Hospital has taken a step into the future after staff completed their first-ever robotic-assisted knee replacement.
The replacement has taken place using the new VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution.
The new system looks to improve patient outcomes with shorter stays in the hospital and increased mobility post-surgery.
In the UK, over 70,000 knee replacement surgeries are performed each year, with most patients being over 65 years old.
Shahbaz Malik, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Droitwich Spa Hospital, carried out the first VELYS procedure on March 13.
Mr Malik, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Droitwich Spa Hospital, said: “Introducing VELYS technology at Droitwich Spa Hospital is an important step forward for patients across Worcestershire needing treatment for knee arthritis and orthopaedic surgery.
“This advanced robotic-assisted system allows us to perform both total and partial knee replacements with enhanced precision, tailored to each patient’s individual anatomy.
“For patients, this means a more personalised surgical experience, with the potential for less pain, faster recovery times, and improved long-term outcomes.”
