Made in Droitwich: The Best Known Exports of UK Towns & Cities

CERTAIN UK towns and cities are famous for a particular output.

A signature dish or maybe a beloved food staple that they produce better than any other

Some locations are synonymous with the product they produce

in Droitwich, the famous Droitwich salt is one of the town’s biggest outputs

The story of droitwich salt is a historic one that dates back at least as far as the roman times, where the town’s briney spring is said to be saltier than sea water. Once produced and sold en masse, production ceased in 1922 for almost one hundred years until local family farm Churchfields decided to revive the local pride.

In this article we explore other UK towns and cities and the output they are most famous for – take a look

1. Halifax & Nestle

Nestle is a brand known all the world over, with 337 factories across 75 countries.

One of these is one of the most treasured views of Halifax locals. Seen from the train station platform, the Quality Street and After Eight factory employees over 550 people and produced more than 12 million sweets per year.

2. Devon fudge

Devon has plenty to be proud of, from its famous coastline and scenery to a scone topping technique that some may consider controversial.

But another of its beloved products enjoyed by locals and tourists alike is its fudge. One of the best-known manufacturers is Roly’s Fudge, who started in 1987 and today have over 40 shops across the UK. However, the independently run and family owned business is highly proud of its heritage and is still handmade today.

3. Bury Black Pudding

ALthough it is one of the town’s best-known outputs, black pudding wasn’t technically invented in Bury.

With references to blood sausage and similar produce dating back as far as Homer’s Odyssey, humans seem to have been enjoying something at least akin to the breakfast staple for centuries.

But from the 19th century onwards, Bury Market has been world-famous for its booming black pudding trade, and the Bury Black Pudding Company is the top commercial seller of the product in supermarkets.

4. Stockport & the McVities Factory

McVities is amongst the UK’s best-loved biscuit brands, with Chocolate Hobnobs, and even Penguin bars regularly topping lists of the nation’s favourite accompaniments to a cup of tea.

And Stockport is proud of its McVities Factory. Producing up to 2,000 jaffa cakes per minute, the factory has been in operation since 1917, employing at current over 400 workers and in 2025, a £21 million investment into the site was announced by the company in conjunction with Stockport Council.

5. Harrods, London

While technically not a specific product, many of Harrods’ iconic ranges are renowned.

A Harrods teddy bear or souvenir gift bag is a favourite to bring back, while the department store is also a stockist of luxury brands from around the world. It also is highly supportive of UK businesses, from fragrance institution Penhaligon’s to London-born chocolatier Charbonnel et Walker, and even its marketing and business suppliers such as Positive ID Labelling.

The department store is one of London’s hallmarks, and its products are sold as souvenirs to tourists from across the world, making for great luxury gifting.

These are just a handful of iconic brands and products from across the UK, and their proud hometowns.
