There’s excitement all around as Bromsgrove’s annual Christmas Lights Switch On returns for the first time since 2019!

Back on Bromsgrove High Street, the festivities will be kicking off on Saturday 20 November with food and music at Bromsgrove BirdBox, street theatre entertainment and a special visit from Santa.

There will be entertainment throughout the afternoon with street performances from 1pm until 5pm along the high street including a Fairy, Christmas Pudding, Fairy Godmother and Jack Frost duo. Food and music at BirdBox will run between 12pm and 6pm and offer family favourites such as Burgers, Pizza, Waffles, Jerk Chicken, Candyfloss, hot drinks and more.

Santa will be visiting on his sleigh with his Round Table helpers at 4.30pm alongside the main lights being switched on. This year everyone can enjoy the countdown and switch-on from anywhere on the High Street. There will be no central stage to avoid overcrowding in line with Covid guidance. The lights will be counted down by Chairman Cllr Rod Laight at Birdbox and an event compère will throw the switch-on a simultaneous countdown at the Christmas Market outside Argos.

This will be followed by the popular Primrose Hospice Tree of Lights switch-on and blessing by Reverend Khan at 5pm outside Asda.

Also returning will be a two-day Christmas Market in on 19 and 20 November in line with the switch-on, in partnership with Friends of St Johns. There will be craft stalls hosted by local traders providing gifts and decorations, festive food and drinks and entertainment throughout the day and a countdown for the lights to be switched on at the top of the High Street. The Christmas market will run 9am to 4pm on the Friday and 10am until 6pm on Saturday. The regular market will also be open until 6pm on the 20th.

Leisure Portfolio Holder, Cllr Phil Thomas, said:

“The switch-on event was greatly missed by everyone last year so I’m glad that we’ve been able to put covid safe measures in place to bring it back for 2021. Although it might not be quite the same format as we’ve been used to, it is guaranteed to be a fun, family-friendly event to welcome the start of the festive season.”

This event has kindly been supported by The Bromsgrove Indie Club.
