APPRENTICES showed how their roles were helping creating Worcestershire’s future workforce during a three-day event last week.

The Worcestershire Apprenticeships Awards were celebrated in a new virtual manner with broadcasts across three days for the first time ever between November 16 and 18.

People gathered in their droves to celebrate with more than 600 views during the three days, making this year’s Worcestershire Apprenticeships Awards one of the most engaged with in the popular event’s history.

Ben Sheehan from Sanctuary Group took the title of Intermediate Level Apprentice of the Year while the Advanced Level Apprentice of the Year was won by Eleanor Steel from Platform Housing Group.

The Higher Level Apprentice of the Year went to Matty James from Herefordshire and Worcestershire NHS Trust and Chloe Harris, from the same trust, won Apprentice Resilience of the Year.

In the employers’ accolades, the Small and Medium Apprenticeship employer of the Year was awarded to Olpro and the Large Apprenticeship Employer of the Year and Worcestershire Apprenticeship Employer of the Year both went to Platform Housing Group.

Platform’s Eleanor Steel also won Worcestershire Apprentice of the Year.

As well as celebrating the success of apprenticeships during the last 18 months, the award broadcasts featured key updates from the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, Worcestershire County Council and other partners on the challenges posed during the pandemic.

And they discussed what action was needed to support businesses and create the county’s future workforce.

The awards were held against a backdrop of recruitment challenges facing many organisations and it was highlighted that many employers were struggling to gain new staff via external routes.

Apprenticeships can be used as an effective way of adding to workforces and through its effective succession plan Platform, in particular, had embraced apprenticeships to overcome current and future recruitment struggles.

Gary Woodman, Chief Executive of Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, congratulated the nominees and winners, adding so many people and organisations were involved in making apprenticeships a success in the county.

“It was fantastic to be back shining a light on the value that apprenticeships provide and how they are a vital route to enhance an organisation or career.”

Coun Marc Bayliss, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy and Skills said: “This year’s awards were yet another example of how apprenticeships are benefitting the lives of businesses and people across the county.

“Well done to all the finalists and winners of this year’s awards as their dedication and hard work over the last year has been exceptional and I hope will inspire others to recognise the value of apprenticeships.”

The broadcast episodes have now been made available on demand so that those unable to join live can watch back and recognise the achievements of the best the county has to offer.

All three nights of the 2021 Worcestershire Apprenticeships Awards can be viewed on demand through the Worcestershire Apprenticeships website here.
