Concerned councillors call for Worcestershire to welcome Afghan refugees

CALLS for Worcestershire to welcome Afghan refugees fleeing the country after the return of the Taliban have been tabled by the county’s Labour and Liberal Democrats.

Labour’s Coun Richard Udall and Coun Lynn Denham have come together with Coun Dan Boatright and Coun Mel Allcott from the Liberal Democrats to make the call at a meeting of the county council tomorrow (Thursday).

The gang of four hope County Hall will echo their concerns over the growing humanitarian and refugee crisis after the recent collapse of the government in Afghanistan.

The last British and US troops left Afghanistan a week ago, bringing their 20-year military campaign in the country to an end.

There has been criticism of the way the West withdrew from Afghanistan, with questions over how the Taliban was able to seize control of the country at such speed.

It’s rise to power sparked a surge of refugees desperate to flee from the prospect of being ruled by the regime.

However Afghan families who have arrived in the UK in recent weeks are being left without access to essentials such as toothpaste, sanitary towels. nappies and medicines while in temporary hotels, a major refugee charity has warned.

The government’s claim Afghan refugees are receiving a ‘warm welcome’ in Britain has been put into question following warnings from the Refugee Council that many have not had their basic needs met or been given information about their future in the UK.

In the motion put forward for debate the councillors said: “Council calls upon the leader and cabinet to do all it can to welcome Afghan refugees and to co-ordinate assistance, help and support for any Afghan refugees coming to Worcestershire.

“Furthermore, council requests the leader of the council to ensure both cabinet and council are kept informed of any events, developments or changes which may affect or support refugees from Afghanistan,” it adds.
