THE FUND-RAISING page set up to help replace items at St Joseph’s Primary School in Droitwich which was severely damaged by fire has already raised more than £5,000.

The page, set up on Monday by Mia Fearn with Ellie Jones and Kirsty Wightman, had an initial target of £1,000 but as the Standard went to press yesterday, more than five times that had been pledged.

Although the school would have insurance, claims take time and the trio hoped to collect cash to replace toys, books, stationery and other items destroyed in the blaze.

They said: “The children are devastated.

“We, as parents of children in pre-school, reception and year one wanted to start this fundraiser, to help the school raise funds for the toys, books and stationery that may have been damaged in the fire.”

The blaze broke out in the early hours of Monday morning and was already well alight when fire crews arrived at 1.45am.

It took more than 30 firefighters – using water jets and compressed air foam – to bring it under control.

Crews remained on-site throughout Monday to ensure it did not reignite.

Fire investigators have launched a probe into the incident in a bid to ascertain how it started.

Area Commander Ade Elliott said he would like to thank all of the emergency services and other agencies for their hard work throughout the night.

A statement from the school expressed sadness at the fire, adding they were thankful no-one was hurt and the school would be closed until further notice.

Coun Marcus Hart, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Education and Skills at Worcestershire County Council, praised the police and fire service for their swift response.

He said the authority was working closely with the school and the council’s partners to find a short-term solution to support pupils with their remote learning and would be considering the long-term options for fully reopening the school as soon as possible.
