Put pen to paper - Trust urges loved ones to write to patients

Droitwich Editorial 28th Apr, 2020   0

FAMILIES and friends of people in hospital are being invited to turn to ‘snail mail’ and send letters to bring cheer to their loved ones while they are being treated.

With all but essential visiting suspended at the Alexandra, Kidderminster and Worcestershire Royal Hospitals to keep patients and staff as safe as possible during the coronavirus pandemic, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is making it as easy as possible for families and friends to keep in touch.

Alison Robinson, the nurse in charge of the project, said: “Many patients will be able to pick up the phone and call or message their friends and family members themselves.

“However not all will be able to do this.

“Therefore, if family or friends would like to send a letter, we will make sure their loved one receives it.

“At this difficult and anxious time for patients and their families, we hope this is one way of ensuring our patients have contact with those who are important to them and bring them some joy.”

The Letters from Home scheme is running alongside the Trust’s ‘virtual visiting’ scheme where, thanks to generous donations, over 130 iPads have been bought and distributed to wards to allow patients and their loved ones to stay connected over Skype.

Letters from home should be emailed to: [email protected] and include the patient’s full name, date of birth and address if known, which hospital they are in and the name of the ward.

Those who wish to put pen to paper can also post letters, addressed to ‘Letters from Home’, at the relevant hospital, with the ward name clearly marked.
