THE WELL-KNOWN former Headmistress of Otillie Hild School in Bromsgrove has died at the age of 91.
Iris White passed away in her sleep on February 24 after a period of illness.
Mrs White was well known in Bromsgrove, first as a teacher at Otillie Hild School in College Road which she joined in 1964 before becoming headmistress in 1974. She remained in that role until her retirement in 1987.
Mrs White ran the school on firm but caring lines, she expected and obtained a high standard in all subjects and gave the children in her care a desire to learn and work hard.
She was highly regarded for always showing respect and attention to each individual child bringing out the best in them all.
Following the death of her husband, Len in 1985, Mrs White sold Ottilie Hild to Bromsgrove School and then following a period of transition she retired in 1987.
She continued to show an avid interest in the education and careers of her former pupils, staying in touch with many of them until her death.
She received regular visits from previous pupils at her house in Wychbold and was renowned for never forgetting the name of a pupil or their parents.
In retirement Mrs White was active in the local community helping out with Meals on Wheels and visiting elderly people.
She was a church warden at St Michael’s in Upton Warren for many years and a staunch member on the Wychbold Women’s Fellowship.
Iris White was a very special amazing lady who will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew her.
There will be a service of thanksgiving at St Michael’s Church in Upton Warren at 3.45pm Friday, March 16.
