ENERGY saving Worcestershire County Council has been crowned Council of the Year at the West Midlands Regional Energy Efficiency Awards for 2019 – for the second year running.

The recognition highlights the work undertaken by the authority and the financial and carbon savings it has achieved.

Several projects have helped to contribute towards its success across three categories, including Greener Council, Greener Community and Greener Business.

In the past 12 months, the Warmer Worcestershire scheme has attracted more than £600,000 for residents to make home energy efficiency improvements. 143 households have also switched to a cheaper energy tariff through its energy switch, saving an average of £132 per year.

Its Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEEP) has helped 157 businesses, providing support for an energy assessment of premises and options for grants towards the cost of improving energy efficiency.

So far, 63 businesses have received support from the Council’s Low Carbon Opportunities Programme which provides low carbon innovation and renewable energy support and includes grants towards the cost of installing renewable technologies, such as heat pumps and solar panels to reduce the running costs and CO2 emissions.

The project has identified savings of 1,100 tonnes of CO2 per year to local businesses.

The Council has been receiving funding from the European Regional Development Fund to deliver the above low carbon initiatives with its partners Herefordshire and Telford and Wrekin Councils, and Hereford & Worcester and Shropshire Chambers of Commerce.

Liz Alston, sustainability manager for Worcestershire County Council said: “It’s fantastic news that we’ve managed to win this award again, our consistent presence and commendation in this category over the last three years showcases how much our sustainability programme continues to develop and help Worcestershire become more environmentally friendly.”
