Worcestershire school pupils urged to enter UK rocket-making competition

Droitwich Editorial 13th Feb, 2018   0

CREATIVE pupils from schools across Worcestershire are being urged to reach for the stars and compete in the UK’s largest youth rocket competition, writes Olivia Jackson.

It is aimed at those aged between 11 and 18 and is free to enter.

The contest challenges participants to design, build and launch a model rocket which has two uncooked eggs as passengers which have to remain intact throughout the voyage and the landing.

The rocket must reach 800ft with a specific target flight duration of between 41 and 43 seconds.

Designed to encourage team-work, creativity and innovation, UKRoC enables young people to gain practical insight into how science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects are used by the aerospace defence and space industries.

The winners will go forward to take on the USA, France and Japan in an international fly-off, providing a brilliant opportunity for all young aspiring engineers.

Chief Executive of ADS Group, Paul Everitt said: “Last year, national champions The Sweyne Park School came close to knocking the reigning international champions Team USA off the top spot at Paris International Air Show.

“It would be fantastic to see a team from the West Midlands bring the championships title home after competing in the international final at Farnborough International Airshow 2018.”

UKRoC is sponsored by Lockheed Martin UK and has strong support from the aerospace, defence and space industries as well as MPs and famous faces such as the UK’s celebrated astronaut Major Tim Peake.

Entries must be in by February 28.
