Calado back on the grid for more virtual racing

FORMULA E is back in action this weekend, albeit virtually, as the all-electric street racing series continues in the esports arena with the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge in support of UNICEF.

Having made his bow in the opening round of the challenge last weekend, Panasonic Jaguar Racing Formula E Team driver James Calado from Cropthorne will be competing in the second competitive round of The Race at Home Challenge.

The action will be shown live on Eurosport 2 from 3.30pm on Saturday and will be one of very few, if not the only, sporting event broadcast live on Saturday in the UK.

Calado currently sits 16th in the real Formula E drivers’ standings, with the season on hold until at least July due to the rise of coronavirus.

The ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge will feature two separate grids running in parallel – one comprised of drivers from the ABB FIA Formula E Championship and the other one filled by some of the fastest gamers and influencers.

The winning gamer will make the transition from the gaming world to secure real-life track time on a Formula E circuit during a race weekend.

The online events will use a Race Royale format specific to gaming, in which the the last-placed driver at the end of each lap is eliminated.

Calado revealed he enjoyed the opening event. He said: “There was quite a bit of carnage, especially going into turn one, but it was good racing, albeit a lot different to reality.”
