Warriors boss takes the positives after setback

WARRIORS chief Alan Solomons has hailed the resumption of the Gallagher Premiership campaign after the Coronavirus pandemic as ‘massively beneficial’ despite just one win in five games for his side since the restart.

Speaking ahead of the trip to Bath on Wednesday (September 9) evening, the Sixways boss said he understood the frustrations of the Warriors faithful in particular over the performance in the second half of games since the top flight resumed last month.

Warriors again suffered a second half collapse on Friday night as Bristol swept to a bonus point victory behind closed doors at Sixways.

Warriors led 13-10 at half-time but failed to score another point after the break as Bristol capitalised to capitalise on a plethora of mistakes in all areas and used their pace and power to score four unanswered tries in a one-sided second period.

“There was a massive momentum swing when Bristol scored two tries in the first ten minutes of the second half, both from breaks by Semi Radradra, the first from a scrum five metres from their line and the second from a scrum on their ten metres line,” Solomons said.

“We turned over the ball 13 times in that second half and gave away six penalties so we could not build any pressure. We need to get field position and hold on to the ball for longer, reduce our penalty count and our turnovers as well.”

Solomons highlighted the ‘valuable’ game time given to the club’s young players who were being exposed to new ideas from the club’s new coaching staff.

“We have to look at ourselves and stick to our processes and processes. At the moment if things go wrong we tend to go into our shells a little bit,” he said.

“Going into the 2020/21 season we will be much better prepared as a result of the coaches having had this time to work with the players.”

“We have some great players here and we are building something here with all our young Worcester lads. I believe we are going to see the benefits of in years to come,” he added.

GJ Van Velze faces a trip to see a specialist over his dislocated shoulder while Joe Batley, Marco Mama, Jamie Shillcock and Perry Humphreys have joined him on the treatment table.

Ed Fidow has recovered from hamstring and groin injuries and is available for selection.

After the trip to Bath, Warriors visit the Twickenham Stoop to tackle London Irish on Sunday (3pm).
