The Gaumont Cinema in Worcester is Now at Risk

Correspondent 30th Sep, 2025   0

The former Gaumont Cinema in Worcester is now classed as being at risk. The building was added to the list last year, as it’s been closed since 2020.

What Circumstances Led to Its Closure?

The Gaumont Cinema in Worcester closed for a number of reasons. Even though it opened as a bingo hall after the cinema closed, it simply wasn’t able to stay competitive. Bingo halls across the UK are now adopting digital screens in their halls, meaning that traditional dabber and paper bingo is becoming a thing of the past.

Online bingo casino sites also offer more variants, so people can find new ways to enjoy the same game they know and love. Some of the variants you’ll find online include Cash Cubes Bingo and Mystic Meg Bingo, which offer fresh takes on traditional bingo games.

It’s hard for traditional venues to offer things like this, so evolution is key to staying competitive. Some bingo halls are doing this by using an RNG to announce the numbers. In some venues, the numbers are even marked off automatically, which helps to align the physical experience with that of the online world. With that said, the Gaumont Cinema venue failed to adapt in time. The venue, which was also once a cinema, also struggled as a result of competition. During its time as a cinema, it faced heavy competition from Odeon, which opened across the road on Foregate Street. In fact, the week that Gaumont closed, Odeon opened up a triple-screen cinema.

Are there Any Plans for the Future?

So, are there any plans for the future of Gaumont Cinema? Right now, there aren’t any, but a local Worcester resident and actor has spoken up about his vision of how the building could be brought back to life. He said that the venue, before it was a cinema and bingo hall, once hosted some of the finest music acts in the world. It would be great to bring this back, especially given its rich music history. The Gaumont Cinema once hosted classic acts, including Buddy Holly & The Crickets, in 1958. Gene Vincent and Bo Diddley also played there. The Beatles appeared there on two occasions in 1963, followed by David Bowie and Queen. You can read more about the bands who played there by reading the BBC article about the venue and its glory days.

Even though the venue is no longer being used for bingo or operating as a cinema, it’s amazing to see how rich a musical history it has. Over time, it would also be interesting to see how this venue could be transformed into a more modern establishment. Homage could be paid to the acts who once graced the stage to tie in with the historic feel of the building, but at the same time, it would be great to see improvements as well. Digital ticketing booths, updated merch stands, and even updated sound and lighting equipment would have music acts from across the country swarming to The Gaumont once more, and could even save it from being demolished.
