WEST Mercia Police has revealed its drink and drug-driving statistics from the festive season.

From December 18 to New Year’s Eve, 83 drivers were arrested for drink-driving and 61 for drug-driving.

The stops mean 144 motorists are facing a minimum 12-month driving ban, a fine and potentially a prison sentence of up to six months, along with a criminal record.

The force launched its annual anti-drink and drug driving campaign in mid-December, warning motorists not to take risks.

After the past three years, 21 people died and 111 were seriously injured in the West Mercia Police area following crashes where drink or drugs were recorded as a contributory factor.
