A NEW Lidl will be built on George Baylis Road in Droitwich after plans were unanimously approved by councillors from Wychavon District Council this week.
The plan, which had already been recommended by officers, will potentially create up to 40 new jobs at the supermarket – which is known for it’s cheap prices.
An in-store bakery and functional car-park will be included in the 1,325 square metre space used by the new Lidl.
The current buildings in the area – occupied by Acorn Catering Equipment – will be demolished in the near future.
At the meeting on Thursday, Coun Bob Brookes, who represents Droitwich Spa East, said: “I’m very happy to recommend approval. From what I’ve seen, it would be a great improvement on what is a brownfield site.”
Councillor Margaret Rowley, who represents Bowbrook on the district council, said: “There was a time when we wouldn’t allow retail developments in this area but there has already been close-by retail developments and we could not sustain refusal.
“Besides, it’s important to keep variety and healthy competition between businesses. I don’t think there should be any doubt about the approval.”
