PUPILS from Hanbury C of E First School joined with Droitwhich’s ‘Tennis in the Park’ for a sponsored-10,000 hit challenge last Wednesday.
Volunteers from the Tennis in the Park organise low cost, pay as you go sessions for all ages and abilities.
Every child and staff member got the chance to hit the ball to help reach the 10,000 target. The cash raised from the event will go towards buying new equipment for the school’s PE department.
The group was keen to support the school as Leo Mercer who was a regular at the tennis sessions.
Leo remains a very much-loved member in the Hanbury family since his sudden passing last September due to a tragic accident.
Headteacher Aaron McDonagh said: “It’s nice that we can join together with others from our local community who also knew how wonderful Leo was.
“Leo had such a positive outlook on life and was proof if needed that sport can be such a force for good. Combining both of these strengths, played a big part in reaching our target of 10,000 hits.”
Recently Hanbury C of E First School has been awarded its fourth consecutive Gold School Games Mark.
That award recognises the opportunities offered for children to learn and compete alongside other schools in the community. It also ensures a diverse and engaging range of sports are offered to all classes in addition to host of extra curricular clubs to join.
