THE CHAIRMAN of Droitwich Spa Allotments Association has spoken of his hope for more sites to be created across the town.
Bob Crawford made the plea in a letter to The Standard, claiming there had been no new sites in the Spa since 2009.
There are currently 97 plots across four sites in Droitwich – Vines Lane, Copcut Park, Chawson Lane and Westwood Lodge (on the Westlands near the High School).
Mr Crawford said: “The proposed sites for residential development at Salwarpe and Yew Tree Hill both have areas earmarked for allotment gardens but the council says it will not have any management of these as they are to be for the residents of those developments.”
A spokesperson for Droitwich Town Council said the organisation would happily run the sites on behalf of the developers as private allotment sites tended to be more expensive than local authority-run plots.
Over the last three years a committee, featuring representatives from each of the four sites, has been meeting every three months with the council to improve the management of the sites.
People on waiting lists are now contacted each year to see if they want to remain on there. That has helped contribute to the list dropping from 112 in 2010 to 22 in 2014. The current waiting list is 23 and, added the council spokesperson, people should be able to get an allotment in Droitwich within two years.
Regular site inspections are held by the council and action is taken if plots are not cared for or cultivated.
A site on Berry Hill was closed around 25 years ago and that, said Mr Crawford, could be reopened.
But Droitwich Town Council dismissed that call, saying one of the reasons it closed was because the site was infested with rabbits who helped themselves to carrotts and other vegetables makiing it impossible for the allotment’s owners to fully grow anything.
It also said the site was also currently unsuitable.
Mr Crawford urged any residents interested in having an allotment to get in touch with the town council.
