THE CHAIRMAN of the Remembrance Day Committee has reassured Droitwich residents sound problems at Sunday’s service would be fixed for next year.
Mel Bates thanked visitors who braved the cold at Victoria Square and apologised on behalf of The Droitwich Spa Royal British Legion for the technical issues which were due to signal interference.
Despite microphones being tested before the service, the recently installed G4S mast near the Lido was operating on the same wavelength as the radio microphone.
When the crowd assembled, mobile phones picked up the signal and amplified it, causing severe interference on the radio microphones being used for the service.
For next year, there will be a return to wired microphones which will involve mats on the floor to prevent tripping.
Mr Bates said: “It was wonderful to see so many people including children who wished to pay homage to those who have given their lives in the defence of freedom.
“The event is organised by a dedicated group of volunteers working alongside members of the Droitwich Spa Legion branch and it is rewarding to see the efforts of this small group so richly appreciated.
“Finally can I apologise again to everyone for the failure of the sound system which marred what was in all other respects a very memorable Remembrance Day.”
