Arson at Droitwich Lido Park causes £11,000 worth of damage

ARSONISTS have caused £11,000 worth of damage at Droitwich Lido Park after starting a fire in a play area.

The incident happened about 10.10pm last night (Wednesday) and two people, who were skating at the time, saw the blaze and reported it to the fire service.

It broke out in a 25sq metre area next to the old tennis courts which contained a wood and plastic climbing frame and slide.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said two crews from the town’s fire station were sent out to battle the blaze and the fire claimed 70 per cent of the play equipment.

The play area has been fenced off for safety reasons and the police, who are today continuing their investigation into the incident, have urged any witnesses or anyone with any information to call officers on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A Wychavon District Council spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by this fire and we urge anyone who might have any information about how it started to contact the police.

“Fortunately no one was hurt in the fire and of course the remainder of the Lido park is open to the public, as is the Lido pool and café.”

Two residents who live near the Lido Park sent The Standard these pictures.

One said: “It’s such a shame that a park, such as the Lido, that has won so many green awards is reduced to this sort of vandalism.

“Lets hope the culprits are caught, and Wychavon District Council is able to fund any replacement of equipment and is able to open the area as soon as possible.”
