THE COMMUNITY of Droitwich stood and watched today (Monday, February 24) as a mural in honour of the town’s ‘King of Comedy’ was unveiled on the high street.
A mural to honour the late Droitwich native, Rik Mayall, was finally revealed on the high street as the local community gathered to catch a first glimpse of the striking art piece.
It was designed and executed by artist, Milan Topalovic, who spent between 100 and 150 hours perfecting the piece which has depictions of Rik Mayall’s characters in popular shows such as Blackadder, Bottom, The Young Ones and Happy Families.
The piece depicts Mayall’s many recognisable on-screen costumes and includes in-jokes and references to his characters as well as his inspirations from theatre and comedy.
A jester, often a character who questioned authority in Shakespeare plays, is depicted in a nod to Mayall’s love of theatre and his efforts to challenge the norms of comedy.
A portrait of Rik Mayall, posing as a monarch would on a note or coin, features as the artist drew from his extensive work as a portraitist.
Droitwich Spa is also heavily referenced in the piece through depictions of it’s historic architectural style and even a raven.
It is displayed across the entire window of the former Ultima One shop which is now Rik Mayall’s Comedy Emporium.
The emporium store was designed as a concept to play into the theme of the artwork and despite rumours there will not be a physical store at the site.
Milan, a big Rik Mayall fan, said it was a ‘pleasure’ to see his hard work on display for the town to enjoy. He told the Standard: “I love what I do. I put every single thing into every project.”
He also spoke of his delight at Mayall’s sister’s involvement in his creative process. The pair spoke at length to brianstorm references and anecdotes for the piece.
The artist added: “She was so generous with her time. It’s just a pleasure to do it, bringing together bits that mean so much to Droitwich.”
The mural has been unveiled ahead of the launch of the hotly anticipated Rik Mayall Comedy Festival in Droitwich (May 31 to June 7).
Richard Morris, an integral committee member in the event’s organisation, said: “I would like to thank Milan for his enthusiasm and great artistry, he has really created something magical.
“It has really set the tone and the great appetite for this event.”
Droitwich town councillor and Wychavon chairman, George Duffy, spoke of the excitement for the festival’s headliners and the chance of some exposure for the town’s smaller venues who will be hosting fringe-style concerts.
