Bid to delay Droitwich Full Fibre pole introduction falls despite Wychavon pleas

AN ATTEMPT to delay the roll-out of Full Fibre poles in Droitwich so other methods could be looked into has been knocked back.

Wooden poles are set to be installed by Full Fibre Ltd on streets across the town, causing backlash from residents who say they feel, contrary to what Full Fibre has said, an underground installation is feasible.

Last month, residents including former councillor William Moy called for a ‘full and proper investigation’ into alternatives to installing Full Fibre poles, claiming they would be a blight on the landscape and reduce the value of houses.

Wychavon District Council chief executive Vic Allison said the authority had requested Full Fibre look into other methods of providing their service such as in underground networks.

However, Mr Allison added for commercial reasons Full Fibre was unable to commit to changing their current course of action.

Mr Allison said: “We welcome the improvements that Full Fibre are making to progress broadband speeds in Droitwich Spa and the investments and benefits that go along with them.

“However, we share the concerns of our residents regarding the number of poles being constructed in the area.”

Wychavon has no legal powers to stop Full Fibre from putting up poles, as permitted development means Full Fibre does not need planning permission from the council to start work.

A Full Fibre spokesperson said it was working hard to future-proof the town for generations to come and ensure it remains a popular place to live and work.

“We are aware this upgrade can bring a level of disruption and change, and we have focused on working with the communities to ensure they have the opportunity to influence our build.

“Poles form a significant part of UK infrastructure and most people in the UK are served by poles – up to 80 per cent in many areas.

“We hope Droitwich can see the huge benefits our network brings.”
