MORE THAN 400 exhibits were displayed at the Droitwich Spa and District Horticultural Society’s 72nd show on bank holiday Monday.

Vibrant flowers, large vegetables and photography were among the displays and Mayor of Droitwich, Coun George Duffy, presented the awards.

Royston Evans, who was surprised to win an award for the best runner beans, said he was ‘elated’ as he did not think her vegetables would make the grade.

“It has been a poor season for vegetable growers, and this is the first time I have really had to scrape the barrel.”

Peter Clubb, who has been in the growing game for the past 30 years, took three titles.

He said: “I wake up at 6am and work on my garden until 9am – I then head back into the garden in the evening and carry on working.

“You don’t do it for the awards – though it is nice to win- you do it because you love to do it.”

Nick Baker, Droitwich Spa and District Horticultural Society’s treasurer, said it was especially good to be celebrating the 72nd show after missing the past three years because of Covid.

“It is good to be back and adding to that tradition.”
