Brave Droitwich man John's new 'hand press' challenge to raise funds for MND reasearch

A BRAVE Droitwich man who is battling Motor Neuron Disease (MND) and has raised more than £10,000 towards researching a cure for the condition has launched a new challenge for January.

John Adams started creating gift tags last month with an initial target of £300.

The drive, featured in the Standard, exceeded all expectations and funds were boosted when Webbs garden centre donated a Christmas tree which was put up outside John’s home in Vines Lane.

People – for a minimum £2.50 donation – were able to dedicate hand-made glass and wooden baubles to loved ones on the branches and the fund-raising total spiralled.

John was diagnosed with MND four-and-a-half years ago after initially having regular falls.

Prior to those he was a very fit man who loved gardening, had two allotments and supplied vegetables to all his family and friends.

He never spent a day indoors – rain or shine – but MND took the use of his legs and he is now unable to speak, receives food and fluid through a peg in his stomach and has a catheter.

Despite his daily fight, he has always remained upbeat and never complains.

In his latest challenge John, who still has small use of his hands, is aiming to do 1,500 hand-presses throughout January.

The number is significant as 1,500 people will be diagnosed with MND during 2022 and it will be a challenge for John who usually averages six-a-day.

John said: “After these past few years, I now know loads more about the disease and yes it is horrendous.

“I hate the thought of anyone this year being diagnosed and starting this journey.

“Remember, it could be anyone of you or a member of your family or a close friend.

“So while I am still able to do so, I am going to try and raise as much money as I can for MND research.

“I will push myself and for every one I achieve, it will represent someone (or a family) who has been effected by MND.

“We have to find a cure, so please help by supporting my challenge.”
