THE TOWN’S football fanatics raised around £6,500 for Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven on Saturday as Droitwich Soccer Aid returned for its second leg.
Around 250 people enjoyed the game in the glistening sunshine at the town’s rugby club as the Droitwich Seniors beat the Droitwich Veterans 5-3 to maintain their 100 per cent record in the game.
This year’s charity was chosen after the sister of one of the soccer aid stars recently had to have a double mastectomy, although she’s now recovering.
This year’s event also featured a fun fair at the rugby club as well as a bar and barbecue, face painting and ice cream.
There was also a sports memorabilia auction as well as an evening of live music and a disco.
And at half time Droitwich’s aspiring young Harry Kane’s were invited onto the pitch to take part in a ‘score and win’ competition.
Veterans player Steve Pitts was the inspiration for last year’s inaugural match having developed testicular cancer during lockdown and it has now become an annual event.
This year’s charity supports women across the county who have breast cancer, with the breast unit haven located on the site of Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
Simon Graham, who helped to organise Droitwich Soccer Aid said: “In just two years we have come to realise the appeal of Droitwich Soccer Aid and the effect it could and is having on the community.
“It is bringing people together who don’t see each other from one year to the next, the event is fast becoming known for not only raising charitable funds but creating a special gathering too.
“It would be great if, in a couple of years, we had a Droitwich Sport Aid, a day or weekend where all sports groups came together to host one big community event.”
