A NORDIC walking instructor covering Bromsgrove, Redditch and Droitwich has set himself a 3,000 mile walking challenge by the end of 2020

Working out at an average of 8.21 miles per day, Malcolm Church, who works at Mercian Nordic Walking, decided to up the ante after smashing his original target of 1,000 miles by June.

Since then the 68-year-old has completed another 1,000 miles, leaving him with under four months to cover the final third.

So far he has raised more than £600 for homeless charity Socks and Chocs, which will be used to help people with accommodation, clothing and toiletries.

“I started Nordic walking in 2016 and decided it was the type of activity that could offer everything me and my wife were looking for to keep in shape,” said Malcolm.

“Recently I decided to extend my challenge to hopefully making a total of 3,000 miles walked this year.

“Thank you all to those of you who have already sponsored me for the benefit of Socks and Chocs.”

Nordic Walking is a specific fitness technique not to be confused with trekking, hill walking or trail running.

The poles are planted in a specific way to increase upper body strength.

It can be done anywhere and does not require expensive equipment or clothing.
