Bromsgrove Concerts set to celebrate its 60th birthday with string of concerts

Droitwich Editorial 24th Sep, 2023   0

THIS YEAR marks a marvellous milestone for Bromsgrove Concerts which is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

To toast the fantastic occasion, a concert will take place at Routh Hall in Bromsgrove School next Friday, September 29.

Bromsgrove Concerts has been putting on a variety of classical events for music-lovers from across the district and beyond for six decades.

The organisation was founded by Jim Page and Jennie Macgregor Smith in 1963, who have together done so much for arts and music in the town. This included the creation of Artrix theatre and arts centre.

Alastair Moseley, from Bromsgrove Concerts, said: “The club is starting its 2023/24 season with a party atmosphere and has pulled out all the stops to put on an opening concert guaranteed to get the audience smiling and tapping their feet.

“There will be jazz, pathos and comedy in this programme, inspired by the iconic Simon Rattle Jazz Album, which sees the Birmingham Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble put through its paces by local music director and clarinettist, Keith Slade.”

The concert will start with Milhaud’s ‘Creation of the World’ followed by Stravinsky’s ‘Ebony Concerto’, and Bernstein’s wild ‘Prelude, Fugue and Riffs’ with Keith as the ‘Liquorice Stick’ soloist.

After interval drinks, Milhaud’s ‘Cow on the Roof’ takes centre stage followed by Ibert’s ‘Divertissement’ which is basically about a horse eating a bride’s hat.

Alastair added: “So you can see we are going to have fun.”

Tickets, which include a free glass of wine or soft drink and plenty of nibbles, are £23.

Students and under-18s can attend free of charge and, for those interested in attending more concerts in the year, there are big discounts for buying multiple tickets.

The concert starts at 7.30pm in Routh Hall, Bromsgrove School, and doors are open from 6.30pm.
