BUDDING presenters from Tibberton and Hindlip First School are celebrating after being nominated in the Primary School Radio Station and Community categories of the prestigious national Young Audio Awards 2022.
The clubs are run by Julia Letts whose projects give every year four pupil in both schools the chance to take part for a term.
They record segments and make programmes about things going on in both the pupils’ lives and the local community.
Sometimes the talented creative team also make films.
Throughout the lockdown, a link was maintained with residents at the local Fernhill House care home in Fernhill Heath.
TH Radio – as it is known – sent in a 15-minute compilation of its radio programmes broadcast on the Internet in the past year.
The Community category nomination is for the work with Fernhill House.
One piece – just recorded – details a feature where the children designed and made pizzas for the care home’s residents, cooking their Italian specialities on Fernhill House’s outdoor pizza oven.
The national awards ceremony – run by the Radio Academy – will be broadcast live on Wednesday, March 23 and be hosted by BBC Radio 1’s Jordan North and Vick Hope.
They will broadcast the star-studded event from the Radio Theatre in London from 4.30pm, streaming it live on YouTube.
Some of radio’s biggest names will be in attendance to hand out awards, and the event will also feature a special live performance from Lola Young.
Julia, a specialist in oral history, audio, podcasts and radio clubs, said: “It’s a really big deal as we are first schools, and the children involved in Radio Club are only eight and nine years old, so probably the youngest nominees in the UK.”
