Busy day back at the first Droitwich Repair Cafe of 2023

VOLUNTEERS at Droitwich Repair Cafe’s first event of the year were kept busy on Saturday.

The event, held at the town’s library, had more than a dozen items to repair, including some interesting pieces.

One visitor had the pump for his hot tub fixed and was that grateful and impressed, he is volunteering at the next one later this month.

Other items included three clocks, a radio, a laptop and a set of knives which needed sharpening.

Simon Britton from the Repair Cafe said: “We also had a 1950s teddy bear which was looking very sorry for himself.

“When we opened it up, the stuffing had turned into weird brown sticky stuff.

“The owner has taken it away to give it a clean and when they return at February’s, we will be restuffing it and sewing it back up to restore it to its former glory.”

Among the visitors checking out the event were MP Nigel Huddleston,

Droitwich Town Council leader Coun Bob Brookes and Green Party candidate Neil Franks.

Because some people had difficulty accessing late on, the next one – on February 26 – will be held between 10am and 2pm, during library opening hours.

The Repair Cafe is also looking for more volunteers to come and help out.

Simon added: “We always need people – and it doesn’t matter if they are not fixers or technically-minded.

“We are equally in need of people to be meeters and greeters to welcome people and ‘triage’ them and their items by taking details and helping to fill out forms.

“At January’s there was only four of us so we had a lot of work on our hands.”

The scheme, held on the last Saturday of each month, was set up to help people save money, reuse, repair, recycle and keep items out of landfill.
