PRIMARY age children from local first and middle schools are gearing up for a Singing Day workshop as part of Bromsgrove Festival – with one of Britain’s most popular living composers and arrangers.

Alexander L’Estrange is an award-winning composer, arranger, jazz musician and choral animateur of international acclaim.

Some Bromsgrove children and adults enjoyed performing his composition ‘Zimbe’ during the 2019 Bromsgrove Festival, which featured the songs of Africa.

This year they will learn a piece Alexander composed 10 years ago for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee called ‘Zadok Rules – Hallelujah!’ for an adult choir and children to perform together.

It is a witty whistle-stop tribute to kings and queens, royal music through the ages and the works of Handel.

In all Alexander will work with around 150 children from seven local schools. Lickey End First School, Catshill First School, The Orchard School, Lickey Hills Primary School, St John’s Middle School, Aston Fields Middle School and Parkside Middle School.

Alexander will teach and rehearse with the children in the morning.

After lunch they will be joined by adult singers and the day will end with a short performance of the piece for an audience of parents.

Their performance will be as part of the Bromsgrove Festival and takes place on Tuesday, June 28 at St John’s Church.
