A RALLYING call has gone out for people to help ensure every child in Droitwich has a present to open on Christmas Day.
It comes as The Salvation Army reported an unprecedented demand for toy donations.
The number of referrals of families in need has doubled this year but the number of donations has fallen drastically.
Carolyn Gomersall, the Salvation Army Droitwich Community Programme Coordinator, said: “There is the potential that families get left behind this Christmas or they get some, but the amount of presents is reduced massively.
“We have started to panic a little as we cannot keep up with the demand.
“Financial strains on families, increased prices and Christmas cutbacks have reflected on the donations we receive.”
The Salvation Army Christmas Toy and Gift Appeal is a yearly donation which aims to give a selection of brand-new presents to children and teenagers across Droitwich who may not receive them.
Last year the charity received 96 family referrals for toys, but the demand from just the Westlands estate alone has already doubled this figure.
And the number is already set to rise further as the clock ticks down to Christmas.
In total, the charity will need 600 presents to help fill rising demands, but only has 100 gifts so far.
For health and safety reasons, The Salvation Army asks for brand-new present donations and is also appealing for gifts tailored for teenagers as they can be harder to buy for.
The charity works alongside organisations and charities such as the Droitwich Foodbank and WANDS Children Centre which refer families over to receive presents.
Those wanting to donate towards the appeal can drop presents off at The Salvation Army Centre next to the Droitwich Railway Station or deliver them to the charity’s shop in town.
