Community picnic to be held at the Chateau Impney this Sunday to celebrate Salt King anniversary

THE LONG-awaited community picnic to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Droitwich Salt King will be held at the Chateau Impney on Sunday, June 25.

The event, from midday to 5pm, is being held at the hotel which was once the former home of John Corbett and he was well-known for opening the grounds for family picnics when he lived there.

The event is free and those who go along are urged to bring their own food and drink.

Local history and community groups will highlight the life, times and heritage of John Corbett and members of his family will also be in attendance as well as people from Tywyn and Amblecote which had links to the Salt King.

The official welcome will be at 1pm.

As well as the food there will be live music and entertainment for children, along with light refreshments.

There will also be walks beforehand from John Corbett’s graveside in Stoke Prior to the Chateau.

The first walkers will be symbolically bearing salt from the Droitwich Salt Company, which is starting to produce salt products made from the town’s brine again for the first time in almost a century.

The walks have been organised by the Wychavon Walking Group.

Parking is available at the Chateau Regent Centre Car Park from 9am with bus transport being provided to St Michaels Church, to visit the graveside, with time to walk back to the Chateau for the afternoon picnic celebrations.

Buses will leave the Regent Centre at the Chateau at 9.30am, 10.15am and 11am.

Everyone is welcome but participants need to be over 14, suitably dressed and fit to walk 5.5miles which usually takes 2.5 hours. Dogs are not allowed on the walks.

St Michael’s Church, Stoke Prior, will also be holding an open day on the 25th June, with tea and cakes available, for anyone wishing to visit the grave and historic church by driving rather than walking.
