A BEAUTIFULLY crafted piece of artwork depicting the Nativity has been delighting visitors in Droitwich since it arrived in the town.
The Nativity scene, made of reclaimed and recycled wood, has been created with the help of Droitwich’s churches, community groups, and schools and is on display in the shop window of Peacocks in St Andrew’s Square.
Churches Together in Droitwich Spa came up with the idea of creating the artwork after members of the community noticed there was lots of festive decorations showcasing Father Christmas, his elves and snowmen but not so much about baby Jesus and the Nativity.
After the characters were sketched out by Churches Together they were shipped around the town to different places to receive a lick of paint to bring them to life.
Community groups and school children set about painting them and adding decorations before Peacocks’ manager was kind enough to allow the project to be displayed in the shop window.
Rev Elizabeth Harris, from Droitwich Methodist Church, who headed the project, told the Standard: “We were really pleased with Peacocks in their community spirit to do that.
“It’s been lovely to work alongside the other churches and community groups. It’s excellent to see and a great chance to remind people why we celebrate Christmas, whether you’re a person of faith or not.
“While we love Father Christmas, we thought it would be really nice to see the nativity story as well.
“It’s generated quite a buzz and it has been really good to pull together as a community.” Rev Liz added it was great to be able to create the project in an eco-friendly way.
