Could YOU be a lock keeper? Canal and River Trust puts out appeal (video)

VOLUNTEERS are being sought by the Canal & River Trust to become lock keepers in Hanbury Junction, Tardebigge and Stoke Prior.

The national waterways and well-being charity is asking people to join the abundance of ‘Daves’ and ‘Barbaras’ already on board.

‘Dave’ is the most common name among the Trust’s thousands of volunteers, with more than 130 Dave’s giving up their time to carry out tasks such as helping boats through locks, clearing vegetation and maintaining towpaths.

‘Barbara’ is close behind, and is the leading name among female volunteers.

Now the charity wants more men and women from all backgrounds to perform the iconic role.

Adnan Saif, regional director the Canal & River Trust, said: “Worcestershire’s canals go through such a diversity of cities, towns and villages and this is reflected in our volunteers.

“It’s quite interesting to see so many people with the same name volunteering with us.

“Of course we’d love to continue to welcome dedicated Daves and brilliant Barbaras to our team but we are also looking for new faces to join them so that we can do even more in 2019 to ensure canals across the county are havens for people and wildlife.”

Volunteers, who will be given full training, work on a shift basis throughout the year.

The busiest periods are expected between April and September.

To support the recruitment drive and showcase the benefits of volunteering, the Canal & River Trust has penned a poem.

It calls on people to join the team and has been brought to life by a host of the charity’s staff and volunteers.
