A COUNCILLOR took part in a Droitwich Cycling, Walking and Wheeling Group’s Bike Bus to get a better insight into the scheme, writes Maya Dabrowska.
Bike Buses are voluntary groups of adults and children travelling together by bicycle along a planned route.
They are open to participants of all abilities and are designed to encourage active travel whilst developing road confidence and safety.
The scheme promotes safer streets, healthier lifestyles and reducing traffic congestion to encourage a more eco-friendly environment.
Coun Dan Birch’s participation marked the first time a councillor from the Conservative Party has joined the group on one of its journeys.
His visit gave him a glance into the operation of Bike Buses and he heard directly from those who use it about the benefits of safe and inclusive cycling routes.
Coun Birch joined the scheme on its route to Westacre Middle School, accompanying local residents, families and volunteers.
Matthew Kenny, Communications Officer for Droitwich Cycling, Walking and Wheeling Group said: “It was very positive to welcome Coun Birch on the Bike Bus.
“Active travel benefits everyone – from improving health to reducing traffic and making streets safer for children and families.
“Having councillors experience this first‑hand helps build understanding of what people need to feel confident when walking, cycling, or wheeling.”
Coun Dan Birch thanked everyone for making him feel welcome and said: “It’s an excellent scheme I would fully recommend to any family looking for a healthier way to travel to school.”
