Councillor urges residents to get behind Droitwich Spa FC's campaign to 'bring football home'

A COUNCILLOR is urging residents to get behind the campaign to help ‘bring football home’ to Droitwich.

Coun John Hartley is getting behind the drive for Droitwich Spa FC’s ground at the King George V playing fields to be revamped so it can play its home games in the town again.

For four years, The Saltmen have been playing their home games in Stourport-on-Severn due to their pitch not being up to ground grading levels.

After working with Wychavon District Council, the town’s much-loved football club has been given the opportunity to have their own stadia pitch alongside the 4G pitch at King Georges Playing Fields.

Now, Coun John Hartley, who represents Droitwich Central Ward on Wychavon District Council, is urging local residents to support the club’s fundraising efforts.

He said: “Droitwich Spa FC is a real asset to our town, and I encourage all residents to back their campaign to bring football home to the town.

“Growing up in Droitwich I have seen first-hand the stellar work of the club.

“DSFC plays an important role in the community by encouraging participation across a range of age groups and abilities, to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents.”

The money raised will be used by the club to meet their ground grading requirements and to improve facilities.

Coun Hartley added: “At Wychavon I constantly bang the drum for Droitwich, and I am proud to be part of a council where investment in community infrastructure is high on the agenda.

“I’m proud Conservative-led Wychavon District Council has demonstrated strong financial stewardship over the last decade that has enabled funding towards grass roots community initiatives through the hugely important Wychavon Community Legacy Grant scheme.

“Well done to all the management and stakeholders for the huge effort in getting to this stage.

“Let’s all get behind the club and bring football home!”

REMINDER – Wychavon Community Legacy Grant support needed

A fortnight ago we also ran a story about people being urged to show their support to help turn Droitwich’s King George V Playing Fields into a state-of-the-art sports hub befitting the town.

The facilities are more than 40 years old and are require a much-needed revamp.

An application is being submitted for a Wychavon Community Legacy Grant for the refurbishment of the Sports Pavilion.

As well as Droitwich Spa FC, the fields also play host to the Droitwich Spa Veterans, Ladies, Boys and Girls teams and open age football clubs, along with Droitwich Spa’s Boxing Academy and Hockey Club.
