Creative Droitwich student Imogen scoops Karen Moore award

Droitwich Editorial 23rd Jul, 2023   0

YEAR eight student Imogen Matthews has been named as the winner of this year’s Karen Moore Award for Creative writing at Droitwich Spa High School, writes Lucy Belfield.

The accolade, sponsored by the Droitwich Arts Network (DAN), had the theme ‘The Best Days of Our Lives’.

After the first round of judging by DAN, former Droitwich student Rob Bloom received the shortlisted entries before deciding Imogen as the winner, along with Drew Hankins in year nine and Vincent Lane in year 11 as the runners-up.

Rob, who is now the chief marketing officer for the Aston Martin Formula One team, described Imogen’s work as: “A simply beautiful piece of writing that captures the moments of joy on Earth that make for a happy and fulfilling life, delivered with absolute authenticity and honesty.”

Imogen received a cheque for £100 and a trophy which she will keep for a year. The runners up Drew and Vincent were given some Aston Martin F1 merchandise.

The award was established in 2019, following the retirement of Droitwich Spa High School’s former deputy head Karen Moore.

Mrs Moore said: ” I am so proud of the opportunity the competition gives to the students and the great writing we see and I am also grateful to the Droitwich Arts Network for sponsoring the competition.”

DAN chair Helen Karakashian said the group was very happy to be supporting the creative writing competition and said it was ‘always a joy to judge’.

“I am delighted the quality of writing seems to be going up every year.”
