RESIDENTS across Droitwich and Worcester could get the chance to see the latest meteor shower this weekend.
Tonight and tomorrow (Saturday and Sunday) the Draconid shower could be visible from the late evening and early part of the night but those opportunities could be limited due to cloud cover.
Standard weatherman Paul Tovey feels, because of the of the cloud on these two nights, tomorrow is looking the more likely the best opportunity to see the ‘shooting stars’ although the cloud tonight could thin sufficiently to make it visible.
The shower is expected to peak around 7pm tomorrow but there should be another chance to see the Draconids later this month, around October 21.
And you do not need binoculars or a telescope to see the Draconid display as the best ways to see meteor showers is with the naked eye.
One thing people will need to do, however, is move away from the light pollution of cities and towns into ‘dark sky’ areas.
Among the best places to view them here could be the Lickey Hills or Clent Hills, Frankley Beeches or more rural areas of the county.
The Draconid shower is named after the constellation Draco where the falling rocks appear to come from.
They happen in October and the best two on record were 1933 and 1946 when thousands of meteors fell every hour.
