Drivers urged to take care on the M5 while work is carried out

MOTORISTS are being warned to take extra caution when driving on the M5 in Worcestershire while roadworks are being carried out and to keep to the 50mph limit.

The Safer Roads Partnership is advising drivers that the work will continue until October and speed cameras have been put into operation this week between junction 4 and 6 while it continues.

The M5 is being upgraded to a smart motorway and will therefore have workman on it in both directions. The speed limit will remain until the work is completed.

Anna Higgins, communications manager at the Safer Roads Partnership, said: “Our main concern and the reason why we are undertaking enforcement is to ensure that both motorists and road workers are kept safe. Enforcement is taking place 24 hours a day by average speed cameras. We are therefore urging all motorists to exercise caution as they travel through the area and comply with the speed limit, which is clearly marked.”

Janice Allen, project manager, said: “We realise that roadworks can frustrate road users and we would urge drivers to allow extra time for their journeys, so they can pass through the section safely.

“Safety cameras are used to help minimise the risk faced by road workers – who are often working in difficult conditions next to live traffic, whilst also protecting our customers travelling though those areas on the motorway, as the layout of the road may be temporarily altered to facilitate the works.”
