Droitwich Arts Society folds after 40 years

Droitwich Editorial 16th Nov, 2022   0

ONE of Droitwich’s oldest art societies has folded after not having enough members attending its sessions.

The 40-year-old Droitwich Arts Society had over 50 members when it first opened in the 80s, however, only two members have been attending in recent years.

The final two, Alan Davey and Kieth Uphill, had to make the hard decision to close the evening art group.

Alan said: “Well, have you ever been to a meeting with only two people?

“It is sad, and I stand back and think if I attended the group and saw that there are only two old people there – I think I would go for something else.”

One of the main reasons for the group’s demise was the rise in costs for experienced art speakers in 2008.

To overcome this, in 2010, the group changed from its original evening art talks to a creative workshop group.

But the effects of Covid dwindled the group’s numbers further.

“Covid has taken a lump of energy out of our age group – I am low, and a lot of people my age are low.”

Droitwich no longer has evening art classes available since the group’s closure.

However, Alan is providing the opportunity for anyone who would like to take over the group and try and bring it back to life to contact him.

He said that there is a joint bank account with a small number of funds which can go towards possibly relaunching the club.
