DROITWICH has become the first town in Wychavon to be part of the ‘Safe Place’ scheme which provides locations where vulnerable people can go when they need help and support.
The designated areas have a ‘Safe Place’ sticker displayed on them and feature trained staff members who, as well as being able to offer reassurance, can also signpost them to other appropriate support.
The types of places that display the Safe Place stickers in their windows include shops, businesses and public buildings.
The introduction of the scheme in Droitwich came about when a group of young people from the Our Way self-advocacy group discovered their friends felt worried and anxious when they were out and about.
Initially a ‘Safe Place’ project was set up in Kidderminster town centre and, following its success and with support from Wychavon District Council and the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, the scheme is being rolled out across Worcestershire.
David Hemming, Wychavon District Council’s Community Safety Manager, said: “We’re pleased to be working in partnership with Our Way and the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner to support and develop the Safe Place scheme.
“Supporting vulnerable people and helping them to feel safe and more confident is important and we are looking forward to working together to launch the scheme in Evesham and Pershore in the future.”

People with learning disabilities can register to be part of the scheme and will be given an ‘I need help’ card to carry which contains telephone numbers for Safe Place staff to call when needed.
