Droitwich businesses are upping security following spate of burglaries

A DROITWICH restaurant owner is stepping up security after his business was broken into at the weekend.

Akbar Miah, also known as Aki, arrived at Vasaanti on the High Street on Saturday morning to find thieves had cut through the roof to gain access to the premises before ransacking the building and stealing £150.

He said the place ‘had been trashed’, the cash stolen and substantial damage had been caused to the roof.

“You don’t usually expect this to happen in Droitwich but there has been a lot of burglaries lately.”

We reported last week there had been break-ins at Droitwich Spa Cricket Club and a Canal and River Trust premises on January 8. Then, on January 10, a man was arrested in connection with a burglary at a barber shop.

The Droitwich Spa Tennis Club and Little Al’s cafe in the Lido were burgled on January 12.

Mr Miah added: “The damage to the roof is an inconvenience and is going to cost a lot to repair.

“We spent a lot of Saturday cleaning up and getting the restaurant ready to open for diners on the night.

“Everyone was shocked when they found out about what had happened.”

Mr Miah has already installed CCTV and is now considering putting in an alarm as well.

He said: “January is always a quiet month and this is the last thing we needed.”

West Mercia Police said investigations into the break-in were ongoing.

Safer Neighbourhood Inspector for Wychavon and Malvern, Dave Wise, said: “As we continue to address recent commercial burglaries in Droitwich, we’ve intensified patrols to deter and investigate these incidents.

“Your vigilance is crucial – report any suspicions, and our Safer Neighbourhood Team are ready to provide expert crime prevention advice.”

Witnesses or anyone with any information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
