A LOCAL care home resident has leaned on his love for gardening to memorialise his late wife and honour their shared passion for horticulture.
Fred’s memorial garden, dedicated to his late wife Margaret provides a source of solace for him, helping to promote his well-being in the spirit of Men’s Mental Health Week (June 12-18).
Visible from Fred’s bedroom window, Margaret’s memorial garden serves as a place of longing or mourning for Fred, encouraging him to reminisce on the times he would share his love of gardening with his wife.
Since joining Dorset House in 2022, Fred has forged many new friendships, through conversations and getting involved in the occasional board game with his fellow residents.
Fred has also developed a rapport with the care home’s gardener, Andrew, with the two of them now sharing gardening tips and regularly taking the time to speak with one another.
Lisa Davies, the Lifestyle Coordinator at Dorset House, said: “The garden is a sanctuary for Fred, where he finds comfort in moments of longing or grief, helping him feel closer to Margaret and more at peace.
“This Men’s Mental Health Week is the ideal opportunity to celebrate Fred’s resilience.
“Here at Dorset House, we will support our resident’s wellbeing in whatever way we can.
“We recognise the power of conversation and connection on mental health, and the garden has been a great source of conversation and connection for Fred”.
Men’s Mental Health Week aims to raise awareness of preventable health problems that disproportionately affect men and support them to gain the courage to tackle their issues.
