Droitwich childminder offers free childcare so women can have their cervical cancer tests

A KIND-HEARTED Droitwich childminder whose cousin was diagnosed with cervical cancer is offering free childcare to women if they have no-one to look after their little ones while they go and have a smear test.

Marie Dugmore from Little Bugs Childminding Service decided to launch the service following the devastating news that Vicky Walker, 32, received last year.

Vicky grew up in Hagley but moved to Scotland where she is currently going through chemotherapy treatment.

Marie said: “Because she is so far away I felt so helpless and wanted to do something to help.

“Some people are embarrassed to go but it is only a small test.

“The nurse who did my last one told me she sees it just like all the others, like taking blood pressure.”

Marie has already offered the free childcare to her existing families and has now urged anyone else whose children need looking after while they go for the test to get in touch.

“Most places are happy with mums taking their children with them but it is an invasive procedure.

“I am hoping people will get in touch as we can potentially prevent what has happened to my cousin happening to somebody else.”

Anyone interested should email Marie on [email protected].

Because Vicky cannot work, a fund-raising page has been set up for her by her brother Max to raise £4,000 to help pay the bills and for any treatment costs.

He has already dyed his hair pink, like Vicky’s, for the amount raised so far and if the amount reaches its target he will also dye his eyebrows and beard.
